June 26, 2020

The vacancy volume is slowly increasing again since the low point in the Netherlands at the beginning of May this year. In the Netherlands, we are now back to a vacancy volume of 76% (versus the low of 53%). Dutch intermediaries have been hit especially hard in this regard. They have been hit much harder than direct employers. The volume of newly posted vacancies at intermediaries fell by almost half to 52%. A decline to 'only' 68% was measured for direct employers.

How are job openings doing in other countries?

Germany and Canada have recovered even better in mid-June than Netherlands. They again find themselves above 90%. Austria follows them closely with 85%.
In Belgium, vacancy volume has been hovering around 67% in recent weeks. For France (66%), the United States (63%) and Spain (57%), there has also been a slight increase in recent weeks. Baseline UK shows with a volume of 31% still only slight recovery. They experienced the largest contraction (low point was 19%). However, they too have shown a slight increase since mid-April.

Job index among intermediaries lower than direct employers

If we break down the vacancy index by intermediaries and direct employers, the percentages are more nuanced. The vacancy index among direct employers is higher in the Netherlands than among intermediaries. However, both are on the rise in terms of the placement of new vacancies. If we draw a comparison with our neighboring countries, the Netherlands is in the lead as far as direct employers are concerned with regard to the growth of vacancies. For the number of vacancies of intermediaries, we are competing for second place with Belgium in terms of numbers.

Among direct employers, our lead is closely followed by Germany. And slightly further behind them Belgium and France. The United Kingdom also lags far behind.

Among intermediaries, the index of newly posted vacancies looks slightly different. In Germany, the flex market is doing well. It was still in a dip at the end of May, but has been rising considerably since then. So much so that it the index of approaching the end of January 2020 (before the Corona crisis) race again. Netherlands, which showed another spike (by far the highest of our neighboring countries) in flex vacancies early this year, restores since early April with slight peaks and troughs and is now in second place. Belgium is showing similar growth. France takes fourth place, showing a steady increase since mid-April. Again, the United Kingdom lags behind its other neighbors in numbers of newly opened flex vacancies. However, the slight growth spike in the second week of June is encouraging here.
