How secure are employed people in the Netherlands of work and income? How do self-employed and flexible workers deal with work and income uncertainties? What makes us more secure and why do uncertainties exist? These questions are answered in the fifth edition of Dynamiek op de Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt https://www.cbs.nl/nl-nl/publicatie/2020/06/dynamiek-op-de-nederlandse-arbeidsmarkt-de-focus-op-zekerheid (CBS/TNO).
Temporary work is important
A third of those exiting unemployment end up in temp jobs. It is often an easy and acceptable way to get back to work. But flex work can bring job insecurity. So it is important for you as a business owner to invest in your temporary workers. You can often do this easily by introducing informal learning into the workplace. Informal learning is learning without a preconceived goal or form of work. It is learning on the job, through experience.
Many temporary workers engage in multi-jobbing
In the last decade, the number of people switching employers/professions has increased dramatically. We are also combining increasingly multiple jobs: multi-jobbing. At 7.4% of the labor force, this is now the case. It will give you not surprised that this is common among flex workers and temporary workers. Multi-jobbing offers many benefits. Just think of the informal learning encouraged by changing jobs/professions and having multiple employers. And it promotes your job security, because your acquired knowledge makes you employable with multiple employers. The latter in turn provides opportunities for employers, who are facing a scarcity in well-trained and work-experienced workers.
Let temporary workers learn informally
Informal learning in the workplace is especially important for low-skilled flex workers. This involves performing learning tasks while on the job. In practice, this would cost temporary staffing organizations relatively little effort and money, but for low-skilled temporary workers this is still sometimes difficult to achieve. Temporary employment agencies themselves should spend extra time to gain insight into these positions and they should also adapt the assessment process accordingly. In addition, they should take the time and effort to convince the hirer to invest in this as well. If they invest time in the development of (low-skilled) temporary workers shows that the motivation of temporary workers increases as a result. This results in:
- Lower absenteeism and fewer no shows.
- One can stay in the temp job longer.
- The temporary worker is easier to transfer.
- Temporary workers' familiarisation time is shorter due to (in)formal learning
- The temporary worker is more productive.
- The odds on the labor market of the temporary worker are increased.
